Ceilings Are Important Too

An often over-looked area of a room is what I call The Fifth Wall. Most people call it the ceiling. We all used to know that you were supposed to paint the ceiling white with special, cheap paint called Ceiling White. Duh! But, why would you pay for good paint for four walls and scrimp on the last? The ceiling needs love, too. And the great results will say, “thank you.”

It’s so much more fun to use color on the ceiling, embellish it with swirls or decals, or generally do something unexpected. I like to paint ceilings red for a warm, cozy feeling. Here are some examples I found to inspire you. Have fun.

Here’s a room I did with a red ceiling. The room is a cozy library and the red ceiling adds to the warmth.

How about Apple Green instead of the usual blue on a porch?
Here’s a pharmacy where the designer used decals to emphasize health. The rest of the space is clean and white, which highlights the products.

Lots of contemporary-loving clients insist on white walls. Putting color on the ceiling softens the look and is happier.
Wood for the ceiling is a great idea – especially at the beach.

Do you have a photo of an interesting ceiling? Email it to me and I’ll post it.

Because it’s summer? That’s a good point. You always have to take into account things like exposure and climate.

This room lives in Detroit, where the winters are looooong. There are also 2 large windows in a small room. For us, it’s just right.
