Chair of the Day

China is in the news so much these days I thought I’d turn my attention to the Far East. When we think of countries where great furniture design originates we think more of Denmark than any of the Asian countries. Why is that? I have some ideas, but truth be told, I got up at 4:30 this morning to fly down to North Carolina and I can barely keep my eyes open. So all my ancient Chinese wisdom is down for a nap. The rest of me is soon to follow.

But I digress. I like this beautiful folding chair. So much of the furniture from China is large, boxy and uncomfortable. Yet this chair (and the matching bench) fits the human scale much better than most. It’s an 18th century red & black lacquer elmwood folding chair from the Shanxi province of China. I found it at a website devoted to Asian antiques called Art Treasures Gallery. And now I’m going to unbind my feet and have a snooze. Ciao.
