Fake Not Fabulous
I found a link to this site called Lofty Inspirations and was not amused. I can’t tell you whose blog I found it on – use your imagination. Their site sells “reproductions” of the real thing. I call them fakes. The real Egg Chair is very expensive and inaccessible to a lot of people. But a fake will always be a fake. A couple of Anonymous readers said it best when they commented earlier this year about this issue (here’s the particular post). They said:

There is a little problem with the whole “Look for Less” phenomenon aside from the tackiness of it all, and that is the fact that it doesn’t withstand closer scrutiny. In tiny internet pictures, these stools look a lot more similar than they do in real life. But even without a direct compare/contrast, the chintziness of the cheaper version is apparent to anyone educated in the nuances of quality furniture construction. And ultimately, I don’t think it has as much to do with association with the name brand as it does with being assured of a quality product.
In a way it’s like fine dining. For the unitiated, TGI Friday’s is a fantastic meal. But should you learn a little more about quality food and excellent preparation and presentation, you realize that the TGIF offerings suddenly don’t hold up to an educated palate.

Yeah, I agree with the last Anonymous. If you know anything (about furniture) these stools are quite different, the dimensions and scale gives a whole different feel to the stools. So it raises the question; are they worth compararing at all? Or as we’ve seen in previous posts, the real designer stool is seen by some as undistinguishable from the copy(ish). So again not worth comparing? But totally worth blogging about.
Basically, I feel that if you want the real thing, save up for it. You’ll be happy you did. Personally, I go to bed dreaming of B&B Italia’s Charles Sofa. (Okay, Clive Owen is taking a nap on it – I’m not that dull). It’s so beautiful. I’ve seen copies, but they’re not the same. One day I’ll own one. It’s Clive – er – Charles, or nothing.
I hope I don’t have to look at that link much longer – wherever it was that I saw it.
