Steampunk Design Inspiration

Kyle MacLachlan

I watched Dune last weekend. It’s a terrible movie. Whoever adapted the screenplay (apparently David Lynch) must have been in an altered state of mind, because nothing makes sense. In fact, I couldn’t get to the end of it due to mind-numbing boredom. But it sure looks cool.

That guy in the middle looks as bored as I was. Notice the Beaux Arts-influenced motif on that boiler thing behind him.

In fact, it looks like a Steampunk lover’s dream come true. Anthony Masters was the production designer. So if you’re a fan of Steampunk take a look at Dune and perhaps more of Masters’ work. These images are not the finest representation. The internet offers slim pickings. You’re going to have to watch the movie to truly appreciate what I’m talking about. You have my sympathy. I suggest plenty of popcorn and beer.

Dune is definitely surreal, but so is the book- totally futuristic and weird. I loved the movie adaptation, but then I was 13 when I first saw it and it has remained a cult classic for me since then!
