The Musing of Darlene Shiels

This is an idea I really like. Painter and photographer, Darlene Shiels has launched a new website displaying her work. If you’re interested in a certain work you can email her and have it produced in the size you want. This includes large format prints. As a designer, I like the idea that I can find something I like for a client and not cry because it’s not the right size for the space. Some fine art lover would sneer at that, but I say, “Go &@#! yourself!” Ah, that felt good. Here’s a peek at Ms. Shiels’s work.

I like the dolls, but the flowers will really come in handy for clients. What’s your favorite?

I think I like the florals best, especially the sepia tones.

The florals would go best with most interiors. But the dolls are funky. I’d like them in a dressing room.

The G.F.Y line is right-on. when i was decorating my apt, i was taking heat from people who said that an apt should be decorated around art, not vice-versa. You know what, it’s my apartment. i’m decorating it the way i want, not some tortured artist. if i want something in deep-hued red around 2×3 feet, there are enough artists out there that i can find something that will complement my style. When a dealer or artist tries guilting you into buying something that you know won’t work in your space, just remember that they’re looking out for their commission, not your ambiance, not your wallet, and not you.
