You Can’t Go Gnome Again

So I’m in a very cranky mood today. Therefore, it wasn’t hard for me to get my panties in a twist when I came across Philippe Starck’s latest boondoggle. This is an example of a gifted designer getting lazy and falling for his own press.
A couple of years ago he designed a line of plastic gun lamps spray painted gold for Flos. “Oh, the irony!” Was he trying to tell us that the Western world puts too much value on guns, or did he think this was what every living room was missing?
The thing that irks me about this is that it’s making fun of people who aren’t in the high-design club. They may have a garden gnome in their house, but that’s tacky. Since we (and Monsieur Starck) “get it” it’s not, and we can have a laugh at them. Shame, shame, shame. Am I right, or what?

I’m not really sure that is what Starck intended at all. I’ve never personally met him, but I’ve met several people who have worked for and with him. It seems to me the point is a little “kitch” with your Cappellini is o.k. Whether or not your a fan, you have to admit Starck has done a lot for both the recognition of design and bringing design to the masses. I think it’s a fun piece and it is what it is, that’s all.
