Book Review: Paint Style
Thank you, Benjamin Moore, for sending me a copy of your book, Paint Style, for review. This was a real pleasure to read and I’m happy to add it to my resource library. I’m not saying that because it was free! We have strict standards here at Design Hole.
Paint Style is both a book of inspiration, and a how-to book. I was curious how faux finishes would be addressed, since they’ve largely been replaced by wallpapers as a trend. However, the book does a good job of focusing on ways to create dimension to painted surfaces without over-doing it. And, while there are excellent instructions on applying a faux finish, they aren’t the main component of the book.
Moreover, Paint Style goes beyond the more simple stipples, and branches out into more Of-The-Moment techniques. There are chapters on glazing, stenciling, geometrics, and textures. Each section full of inspirational photos and complete instructions.
I particularly like the fact that, after the instructions for creating each effect, there’s a section which suggests the level of experienced needed for each, such as Venetian plaster (expert). This is vital, since too many similar books whiz through the directions as if any fool could recreate their photo of Taj Mahal-like splendor in a single afternoon. The list also includes the number of people needed, special tools required, and details on preparation.
Of course, since this is published by Benjamin Moore, they give you the colors used for each project. And the book is filled with beautiful photos. As a former amateur painter (I never have time now), I’ve tackled a lot of faux projects myself. The instructions in the book are easy to follow, with clear pictures.
Regarding the whole faux thing, they show you how to go to town on creating trompe l’ oeil looks. But PLEASE, if you must do the marble thing, apply it to something that really should be marble, or could be marble. The total faux thing is so Last Century.
Having stated that clearly, I’ll now state just the opposite and say that I love their faux wood grain section. A¬† lot of the finishes can be used for furniture and accessories. If you’re into geometric designs, they cover that as well. And, as I said, with clear instructions, and a Don’t Kid Yourself approach as to how much experience the more advanced techniques will take.
You can buy the book on Benjamin Moore’s website at their merchandise store. Click on this link. The book retails for $26.95. You’ll find lots of other paint goodies there as well. Enjoy.
