Chair of the Day: Murphy Office Chair
They don’t make ‘em like they used to. As many of you know, I am a hip-challenged person who has thus become an expert on chair comfort. I’m staying in a friend’s apartment in Baltimore this weekend that’s chock-a-block full of furniture. I think there’s a sample of everything ever made in this place. That includes this oak office chair made by The Murphy Chair Company.
At first glance, I thought this chair would be too hard for ‘ole Goldilocks here. But noooooo. It was just right. I like the adjustable back support. I like the contoured seat. I like the scale of the whole thing – not too big, not too medium. This was obviously built back before McDonald’s invented the Super-Sized Happy Meal. It was Comfort Central. If only I could fit it in my suitcase.
I dig it.

These chairs were first made in quantity in the 1930′s. But I’m sure there are earlier models. They were used for schools and offices – not for home use. I hope that helps. I should add that, while I know a lot about American antiques, I’m not an expert. To find out more, check the chair for a manufacturer’s mark and look it up on Google. Also, feel free to send me a photo with your story. I’ll make it a Chair of the Day.

I actually have the same chair. Would you happen to know about the year it was produced and/or the wood it is made from?
Thanks
