Chair of the Day: Pantone

Color expert, Rachel, who writes a great blog called Hue, turned me on to this stool for Pantone. She and I have been sharing rants about Pantone, which I won’t go into here. I’ll just say that they should stick to what they do best. Rachel saw last week’s Panton chair and was reminded of Pantone’s stool. Thanks for the tip, Rachel.

I actually like this stool. It looks just like the color chips that Pantone makes (and should stick to, but didn’t I already say that?). Edward Barber and Jay Osgerby designed a limited edition stools back in 2005 for the International Contemporary Furniture Fair in New York. There were 8 different color sets with 6 different gradations of color in each set for a total of 48 one of a kind Pantone colors. Pantone produced 96 stools and displayed them at the Fair.

Whatever my feelings about Pantone trying to take over the paint and color world, I love these stools and wish I had one. Actually, I think I need four. How about you? It could brighten up your cubicle.

Rachel rocks! She is going to be in the Washington Post on Thursday!

I am lucky enough to have met her a few times, and she’s just as nice as can be!

I love these. They would be a lot of fun in our family room but they are a bit pricy. The wood finished ones were £190. But boy they would be a lot of fun to see with a clean white table.

Totally willing to agree with you on the over-bearing-bordering-on-creepy nature of Pantone’s foray into EVERYTHING. It reads more as an exercise in how far one can take the idea of branding for the sake of branding than it does about the specificity and tradition of the color forecasting industry; which is also maybe a little dubious.

That said, these are hot.
