Chair of the Day: Rapson Rocker

Ralph Rapson, the Modernist architect and designer of the Rapid Rapson Rocker, died today at the age of 93. In the 1940s, he developed his own line of furniture for Knoll, which is currently celebrating Cranbrook’s design legacy where Rapson was a student.

He spent most of his career designing buildings (such as the Guthrie Theater in Minneapolis) and serving as the dean of the architecture school at the University of Minnesota from 1954 to 1984.

Rapson’s chair originally sold for $99.50. Today an original would sell for up to $8,000. An updated version is now sold by Wieler under the supervision of Rapson’s firm.
