Design Inspiration: Adaptive Reuse

Would you want to work here? How about live here? At first glance I’m sure most would say, “Not on your life.” But architects David Yocum and his partner, Brian Bell thought otherwise when they snapped up this former automobile electrical-parts business for $40,000 and turned it into their firm, Bldgs, headquarters.¬†

Given the building’s rather gloomy exterior, the team focused on the interior, emphasizing their resourcefulness in making “more out of less.” The building contains an open courtyard, and large windows were added to add light and improve the view (such as it is).¬†

Who would think that this cheerful, open work space resides behind a rusted facade? The windows face a courtyard.

The courtyard looks beautiful all lit up at night. But I’ll bet it’s rather grim during the day. Yocum did spruce things up a bit. He added an outdoor fireplace and rplaced part of the concrete floor with landscaping.

You can see more photos of the building, and read more details, by going to the article from The New York Times. Let me know what you think of the bathroom floor.
