Design Inspiration: Skin, Florence
Dr. Jorgos Foukis began searching for a designer for his aesthetic medical clinic, Skin, located in Florence, Italy, a year before he hired one. He knew he wanted a minimal space, with lots of white. When Foukis saw the work of designer Michael Young, he knew he’d found his man. He hired Young and his wife, graphic designer Katrin Olina, to transform a 12th-century tower into a completely contemporary space.
Young fashioned carved Corian panels, which are lit from behind and feature a floral motif designed by Olina. The carved Corian concept is one of Young’s, which he presented at a design show in 2003. The sofa was designed by Young for MK Maeda. Young and Olina live in Hong Kong. Olina’s motifs seem inspired by Asian pop culture.
Panels from an existing gate were used as a decorative element (above and below). Young used other medieval elements from the existing structure throughout the space to create an exciting juxtaposition of history with cutting-edge.
The 12th century masonry contrasts beautifully with the glazed flooring. The floor was created by printing the floral image onto clear plastic film, then laminating the film between layers of glass.
Another view of the glazed, floral motif designed by Olina. The Corian panels are on the left. The 12th century gate was used above the doors to accent the existing vaulted ceiling. Spikes from the gate are also hung on the right wall. Once again, a splendid blend of ancient and new.
