Milan Preview

As many of you know, I’m attending this year’s Salone del Mobile in Milan this April. If you haven’t heard of the Salone, it’s an enormous furniture show.

Lighting, bathroom and kitchen fixtures are also part of the event. The exhibits are spread out through several buildings the size of airplane hangars.

Cocktail Seating, a project by seven designers for Maxdesign. This project is aimed to furnish places like clubs, wine bars, and fashionable caf?©s with bar stools.

But it’s more than just a show. Think of the focus on the Paris, New York and Milan fashion shows, and you get the idea. The Salone is where new trends begin and gradually make their way to the States. Just as J. Crew interprets what they see at the couture shows and adapts the design for their audience, furniture companies are inspired by what they see at the Salone.

Nanook by Philippe Bestenheider for Moroso. Swiss designer Bestenheider based his small collection consisting of a chair, armchair and low table on the memory of Inuit tribal rituals and reinterpreted them using digital tools.

I’ll be there, press pass in hand, reporting daily on the trends, the fabulous and not so fabulous. The show opens on April 16th and runs through the end of the week. The photos here are a preview of some of the new designs I’ll be reporting on.

Bambi by Nendo for Cappellini. A small table or writing desk with thin edges and a light appearance. Made of a laser-cut and shaped metal sheet, the table top rests on two rectangular metallic tube legs and can be completely dismantled.

What would you most like to read about? Color trends, green design, contemporary things? Perhaps lighting is your thing. There’s also an entire space devoted to student work and young designers (my favorite). Please let me know and I’ll see if I can add it to my list.

Pixel Sofa by Ron Arad for Moroso (pictured first). Arad’s sofa is composed of several soft parallelepipeds of various heights. Lots of Pixels create many different shapes and arrangements.
