My Dad
My father, Stewart Hulse passed away this week. He was 77 and died of pneumonia. He was a wonderful father who accomplished much in his life. My Dad worked at the Psychology Department at Johns Hopkins University where he was named Professor Emeritus in 1999. It was there that he pioneered the field of animal cognition. He was also the author of many books on the subject and was Editor In Chief of an important scientific journal: Journal of Experimental Psychology: Animal Behavior Processes.
Of course, he was much more than a scientist. He was also a great Dad who took us on nightly storytime adventures with”Dick Smith” – we always helped Dick save the day. When I was a teenager Dad enjoyed dressing in mismatched clothes so that I’d roll my eyes at him. We also enjoyed discussing creative writing, physics and our philosophical views on the world.
I’m taking a few days off – hope to be back on Monday, but maybe Tuesday. In the meantime, I encourage everyone to hug someone they love, play a round of golf, enjoy a good book, and drink some martinis – straight up with 2 olives.

I am sorry to learn about your father’s death. I think I may have known him when he was a teenager and I was much younger. My friend’s father was Frederick Hulse, an anthropologist who traveled widely and was very interested at that time in the possible relationship between head circumference and IQ. Could Fred have been your grandfather? I think he was originally from Seattle. Fred and his wife were close friends of my parents, who met them when they were all living in Hawaii.

I will drink to your great dad when I have a cocktail tonight. I cannot have a gimlet without thinking of my late, great dad.
