Parans Daylighting System Now Available in the US

I received news today that a super-cool new lighting method that involves channeling daylight throughout buildings now has a US distributor. Huvco is now carrying this innovative product.

Parans, was developed in Sweden and is comprised of panels that, when tilted upwards, collect sunlight as it hits. The light is channeled through fiber optic cables into any part of a building which would otherwise never see the light of day. The technology uses prisms in each room to scatter the sunlight. The only downside (if there is one) is that the light can’t be stored, so on cloudy days, or of course at night, artificial light is still needed.

I wrote a post several months ago about the product. It’s really innovative and has, of course, a thousand and one uses. Of course, commercial uses first come to mind, but don’t count out residential options. The first idea that comes to mind is using it in the basement for an extra bedroom, or an in-law apartment. Creating a skylight effect with Parans would trick you into thinking you were on the top floor. I guess you’d have to decide how long you want your bedroom guest to stay.
