Pardon While I Sneeze

I’ll keep this short and to the point. What the [insert appropriate word here] is this?

Why, it’s a tissue holder! But not just any tissue holder. This was designed by Vikki Smyth! Yippee!

Who is she?

Well, according to her press agent, she’s a magician when it comes to acrylics. This little number is “functional art at the minimum, state of the art at the other extreme. As a result, Vikki Smyth’s new line is tradition-defying.” Excuse me while I hurl.

But wait. There’s more…

Dubbed the “diamond of plastics,” Smyth recognizes that acrylic’s unparalleled optical clarity is due to its high index of refraction.¬† “It is this optical brilliance that attracts people,” Smyth exclaims, “but it’s the fact that this abstract arrangement of beautiful blocks can so effectively dispense tissues that captivates them.

Taken prisoner sounds more like it. Because you’d have to have been locked up and re-educated to pay $190 for this.

Is it just me? Or do you see the little film of dust slowly collecting on that top tissue?

Good God, there is so much wrong with this, where do you start? How do you find this stuff??

First of all it’s great that Vikki “recognizes” that acrylic’s unparalled clarity is due to its high index of refraction.” Is that the kind of thing that needs acknowledgement? Who wrote this press release?

Secondly would it really be that hard to maybe have the tissues stacked a little more neatly? It looks like they just threw them in there, and if the dominant design feature is going to be the edge of a pile of tissues, it ought to look neat.

But utlimately that’s what really kills it – acrylic IS a cool material when used right. And as a small sculpture this piece is maybe ok. But you throw the tissue in … sheesh.

And don’t get me started on the rocking base. WTF is the purpose of THAT?

I thought the base were little skis. Weird.

You know, all I can think about is how this is going to look in a bathroom after the steam gets all the tissues wet. Or, if they’re in a powder room, where they don’t get used a lot – they’ll be covered with dust.

The whole thing is a laugh and just eeeeeewwwww.

They’re definitely skis. This lovely item is clearly designed for Northern Tier states, where the angle of sunlight is such that it makes full use of acrylic’s high index of refraction. You guys ought to know that. Don’t those design “devices” on the corners remind you of fine perfume bottles? I have a more practical question. What proportion of a typical Kleenex(r) box fit into this holder? Was there any indication of that in the press release? Also, is this for “boutique” or “standard” (rectangular) tissues?
