You Be The Designer
Here’s something that I thought would be fun and get a good conversation going. Take a look at this room and tell me what you think. Specifically, I’m wondering whether you think the room should be repainted. Are the faux vines too Last Century? Or, considering that the windows allow the garden to become part of the room, perhaps the vines still work - even though this sort of faux thing is really an out of date trend.

Here are a couple of other things to keep in mind. This house will be sold (assuming the mortgage crisis is resolved by then) in about four years. And, the price to have this room painted could feed a small nation for a year. Is it worth the money to repaint? One suggestion I’ve already received is to paint only the doors and leave the walls alone.

What would you do if this were your house? What color would you paint it? There is no right or wrong answer. I hope everyone will have fun, cast their shyness aside and weigh in with their opinions.

Repaint. I think any new owner would have to look hard to get past this much faux-finish.

I think if this kind of thing were in any other room, like a bedroom, it would be really horrible and dated. But it’s not so bad with all the windows.
I really like Ginny’s idea of letting someone else deal with repainting it.
And I know what you mean about the cost of painters. I think I’ll quit my job and become one! :)

I’m sorry, but at first glance it looks like mold is growing from the ceiling. It has to be painted - even if that means getting out a ladder and doing it yourself. The real thing is right outside through tons of windows, why would you want to distract from that?

I understand that problem of people not being able to see past something. My house was crammed with stuff - no wall space left untouched. That’s why be bought it for such a great price. As a designer I could see beyond the stuffed squirrel heads (or whatever they were) hanging in the den. No one else could.
But we’re 2 to 2! We’ll have to keep this going until we reach a definite conclusion. It’s funny, I thought everyone would say, “paint it!”

I like melissa’s idea. Jennifer, you get out the ladder.

It depends. I’d leave it as-is and see what the home-lookers have to say. If a lot of people don’t want to buy the home, or find it stand-offish because of the paint, then definitely paint it!

Oh noes, the tie continues — because I say, “Paint that sucker.” I think it’s distracting and not appealing. Love how many windows the room has, though.

Shall we keep this thing going? I love hearing everyone’s opinions. So keep those cards and letters coming.
What’s interesting is that everyone is in agreement that the ivy has to go. Right? No one is begging to keep it.
It’s more a matter of how to defray to cost of painting.
My opinion is that this room should have been painted at least 5 years ago. It’s time to cover the ivy and bring the room into the 21st Century.

Fun idea! I think it definately needs to be repainted as it detracts from the room and the view. When you look at the pictures, all you see is the faux painting.
I would pick a color from the pillows or the striped chair.

What bothers me is the dark finish on the wood furniture. What would happen if all that heavy stuff were replaced by wicker, and capitalize on the faux finish paint job. It would appear to be a much more charming room…open, light and airy.

This room needs a paint job so badly. There is nothing redeemable about that faux finish. I think a mediocre paint job is better than this. Just a simple white from the cushions or if it were mine a very pale beige to soften it all up.
Bring down the ferns!!!

In my experience whenever people buy a home, they are probably going to repaint anyway. You know? So let the next owners deal with the faux.
