826 Valencia: Pirate Shopping at its Best

The 826 Writing Center is a non-profit organization dedicated to helping kids learn. That takes treasure – and lots of it. The natural solution was to open a shop, 826 Valencia, catering to pirates – a largely untapped market. So far they’ve made a success of it. David Byrne agrees, “definitely one of the top five pirate stores I’ve been to recently.”

The bricks and mortar shop is located at 826 Valencia Street, in San Francisco. The online shop was created for computer savvy pirates who prefer to avoid running afoul of fellow treasure-seekers.

Not a pirate? Fear not. Your doubloons are equally welcome here.

The shop features sevearl great posters, Scurvy Begone (vitamin C tablets), Mermaid Repellent, and of course, a bottle for messages. My favorite item is the poster illustrating the compensation for missing limbs – a must-have for any pirate worth their salt.

The 826 Valencia Shop gets my Design Hole Award for Most Creative Fund-Raising. Don’t you agree?
