Book Review: Automotive Custom Interiors
Does this seem like an off-topic subject? You might be surprised to find that it’s not. After all, someone has to design automotive interiors. Who better to do the best job than an interior designer? Designing car interiors is, like boat interiors, a sub-specialty of interior design. When I was a student at CCS here in Detroit, several of my classmates went to work for the car industry.
Which brings me to an inspirational book on the subject. Automotive Custom Interiors, ($24.99) is published by Motorbooks, and written by Sue Elliot. misterarthur and I had a lot of fun looking through it. Now we need a beat up Chevy to donk out.
If you’re a design student or a car enthusiast, this has some wild ideas and it covers just about every area of the car. I like the dashboard with the chalkboard face and the hand grenade gear shift.
The state of the car industry is in the news a lot these days. But we’re still buying them. And as long as we’re driving someone will be designing and building them. The next time you’re in your car, pay attention to all those details. An interior designer was behind them.
I was in a friend’s new Chrysler mini van the other night and was blown away by the lighting. It was really beautiful. I curious to know if there’s a car with an interior you admire.

My friend is taking up the same course and he told me that it’s really fun and challenging especially if you have that interest in designing. We planned to have my car designed by him step by step. ;)

Can i just say i’m in my second year on an Interior Design course and currently re-designing the interior of an Aston Martin (tough job, but someone has to do it!) and this book was a great inspiration. If anyone is thinking of getting it, do!
