Yay! I’m kicking off the week with a great giveaway. The publishers of Domino Magazine gave me a copy of their Book of Decorating to pass along. See?

Wasn’t that nice? It’s really a great book. It covers each room of the house….

and gives you tips on interior decorating the Domino way.

a

domino-3There are tons of pictures and its chock-a-block full of ideas to steal, decorating tricks and small space solutions.

How do I win this book?!

Enough with the book review already! Everyone loves Domino. So, how do you enter to win? I’m dispensing with the chair-guessing quiz and keeping it simple. Just leave a comment with your favorite interior decorating idea. You can steal one, be serious and give us all a terrific idea, or make up something completely ridiculous. The latter is highly recommended but won’t help you win – this will be a random drawing.

The contest starts right now and ends this Thursday, June 4th at midnight EST. I’ll choose the winner at random and announce the winner on Friday morning. The contest is open to everyone world-wide. I don’t care where you live, I’ll pay for the postage. However, if you’re related to me you’re not allowed to enter. I’ll give you all the decorating advice you want for free.

Can I win a Design Hole tee shirt?

Why yes! I’m throwing in four Design Hole tees shirts. One to the grand prize winner and three to runners-up. I’ll write reminder posts this week. Comments left in any of the contest posts are eligible to win.

Enter now and good luck!

Shabby old chest of drawers? Don’t throw it away – give it a lick of furniture paint and change the knobs for something contemporary, colourful and/or fun!

The best advice I’ve gotten for decorating is to increase lighting. You can substantially brighten up a dark apartment with strategically placed floor lighting aimed at a wall. I once did this while trying to sublet an awful apartment — I got so many compliments on what a lovely apartment it was and people couldn’t wait to take it off my hands.

Kids are only kids for a short time, make their rooms as memorable and fun as possible. They have a whole lifetime of grown up decor that they will deal with.

Theme rooms for kids are the way to go.

Use paint to create a colorful environment. Simple coloring book designs can be copied on to the walls and painted in coordinating colors. Using a bit of creativity, one can invent a magical environment. With a good primer, it can be reinvented without a lot of cost. Don’t be scared of paint!

I’m quite happy with a design idea I had recently. Having no money to buy a new bedroom, I wanted to do something to “replace” the usual platform bed. I used a bamboo blind (color of my dressers and nightstands) that I nailed in the wall. I kept the top of it rolled like 2 inches thick and the rest goes down the wall, behind the bed. It looks great and fits perfectly with my cactus green, zen/nature styled bedroom!

Best decorating tip? Use a cute, darkish colored throw rug in the kitchen – warms it up and provides the perfect place for dogs to wipe their paws. Mine is an Angela Adams, brown circular one with green and blue orbs. I understand why people don’t use rugs in the kitchen but in the two years I’ve had this, all the spills have been nominal/easy to clean and it’s gotten a ton of compliments.

Plants. Plants plants plants. As long as you can keep them alive and healthy-looking, they’ll brighten anything up!

That’s really creative. All kind of things can be used as headboards – including just a door, painted in your favorite color.

I like to change out lampshades to freshen up lamps or for when I need a decor change. They’re inexpensive and can change the whole look of a lamp.

I love to start with simple, yet classic staples in a room and then as my funds and inspiration grow, I’ll add to the room. My favorite pieces are re-purposed furniture–especially furniture found for free!

When looking for a paint color palette for your room or home, use your favorite outfit and use the colors from it!

What’s the best thing you’ve ever found? Mine is an armoire for $40.

The best thing I have found this week is an antique mix master from the 1950s with the original instruction manual. Looks so awesome in my retro kitchen!

Buy what you love and most likely it will fit into your home decor somehow, somewhere. Especially when antiquing.

I have always found “the rule of 2′s” helpful. Make sure you have 2 of any colour that is introduced.. in a painting or pillow, curtains and carpet. I like balance.

My best decorating advice is to not overdo things and always leave an empty area, bare wall space, empty counter top, etc etc in which to give the eye a rest. Keep things interesting with odd numbered groupings instead of an even balance – e.g. 3 or 5 small prints instead of an even grid of 4.

I love repurposing other items for decor. For example, I have two huge glass jars full of wine corks. It is beautiful!

you can never go wrong with any shade of grey. it goes with everything, and is the perfect backdrop to ANY art.

dark grey + lights = great cozy bedroom

light grey + computer = comfortable soft work environment

light grey + white baseboards = subtle architectural detail

grey + yellow = trendy

grey + black and white = minimalistic

grey + brown + green = country

it’s where it’s at!

Choose an item you really love – be it a rug, painting, or lampshade – and use it as the inspiration and starting point for your colour/design scheme when decorating a room.

I love to change out pillows in my living room. I buy or make several different colors/patterns and change them out whenever I feel I need a different mood. Keeping furniture neutral is key so you can have fun introducing color you aren’t sure you want to see a ton of with accessories.

Create a file for each of your rooms. Print out from blogs and tear the pages from magazines photo’s of rooms you love. Put the tear sheet in the folder and when you have the resources go to your room files to look at the style/colors/feel of the tear sheets for inspiration.

I like placing plants everywhere…the bathroom, living room, kitchen, den, etc… There’s so many cool containers and one can never have too many plants. Plus it’s good for the air. Thanks for hosting!

Oh how I wish all my clients would take your advice. Researching what you like is so important. One tip I’d add is start with your overall “look”. What basic style do you like best. If you look at all the photos together, you’ll discover a continuity that will help you to keep your interior design looking unified. A color palette can help here, too.

I’m at a place that I won’t be staying in long enough to justify fully unpacking (and then repacking), so seeing all those brown boxes around was depressing. Since I love art, I started painting them (sometimes extending an image across several boxes) as well as adding some collage.

Send pictures! We want to see.

never buy all matching furniture. select pieces that compliment each other for a better effect.

i’ve recently been adding vintage crochet to my rooms under decor pieces… kind of dusty and kind of kitschy, but it actually really makes things looking nice and homey & a little less sterile.

The best advice I got was: trust someone who sells paint for a living when picking a new white for your bathrooms after painting until 2am the night before only to find that white to have such a green hue that repainting was an indiscutable necessity. Her second color choice was slightly nicer than mine.

Sometimes you can find real treasures for a good price on Craig’s List. I found my dining room set, midcentury coffee table and an African headpiece from Mali this way. Also, when buying art, don’t be afraid to bargain–sometimes the artist will give you a discount, especially if you buy multiple pieces.

I’ve sold things on Craig’s List, but never thought to buy. Good idea.

Instead of installing sliding doors in the closets in our finished basement, I hung queen-sized flat sheets from a (tension) shower rod. No carpentry and very little sewing involved. Easy to change too if I tire of the color and style.

Also, we re-purposed a room. We turned our formal dining room into an office/music room. First we moved the dining set out and into the eat-in kitchen. Next, we moved the piano in from the formal living room and then put a small farm table between two wing back chairs as a desk. The room already had a wall of bookshelves. My husband has a place to put his computer after work and the kids can do homework. We love this room and use it much more than when it was a formal dining room.

Think differently when wanted to give your brick fireplace a facelift.
The big trend is painting it but I covered mine in metal.
It just screws into the brick work and then can be removed later if you get bored of that look.
I went funky and used polished grid plate!

i have a binder with clear sleeves where i save all of the pages of decorating ideas that i have collected over the years. i discovered that i am drawn to the color blue.

My best decorating advice is not to tell your husband your decorating/design plan. He’s not going to get it.

Vintage printed wallpaper using a modern application. Whats the point of using wallpaper if it doesn’t make a statement?! I like to use it on just a few walls and let it be more of an art piece rather than a wall treatment.

Decorating started to come together for me when I listened to my own instincts. Use idea books and magazines as a starting off point but go with your own hunches on details. After all, it’s your own home, it should be pleasing to you, first and foremost.

polka dots and stripes are good combination in fabrics.

Don’t be afraid to put color on your walls. After all it’s only paint and can be painted over and over and over.
