Friday Favorite: captain’s sea chest
An antique sea chest is one item that you can’t go wrong with. Use it as a bench, a coffee table, storage at the end of your bed. The list goes on and on.
Chests like these belonged to officers (who had a cabin large enough to hold them). Leonard’s Antiques has a variety to choose from. This chest is from early 1800 and sells for $1,250.¬† Usually, these were painted. I think Leonard’s have been refinished. That lowers the value. That’s actually good news. We’d all be paying a lot more for the original paint.
Sea Captain’s chests have a special place in my heart. My mother’s family hails from Maine with many centuries of sea-faring men in our family tree. I grew up with several of these chests decorating our home in Baltimore.
Don’t we all have a favorite object from our childhood home that means something special? What’s yours?
