Spring Spruce-Up: 7 Steps for a new look

I’m in North Carolina enjoying the warm sunshine and sprucing up Chum Bucket for our renters. You can do the same in your own home – give your house a fresh look quickly and inexpensively. Here are six tips to inspire you.

chum-bucket1. Rotate your art

Perhaps that painting you couldn’t find a place for would look great in a grouping. Change it out and put the existing painting in storage for a while to create a fresh look.

2. Add splashes of new color

Paint is the least expensive way to change the look of a room and make use of a color trend. Or, “un-paint” and go white. Add color with accent pillows, window treatments and accessories.

3. Change the lighting

Too much light?  Install some dimmers.  Not enough light?  Add some up-lighting to the corners of a room to add drama and ambient light. Or, change the wattage in your lamps to create a different mood.

4. De-clutter

Lighten up and remove clutter. Most people have way too many items they’ve collected over the years. Try to identify the pieces you own and love the best. Streamline and only keep the best of the best! (Put the rest on Craig’s list).

5. Re-Arrange

Moving the furniture around and bringing pieces from another room into another space.  No cost in that.

6. Re-accessorize

Go shopping in your house for forgotten objects and change out your accessories. Or follow the trends and go big with just a few large items such as bowls, books and vases.

7. Take a photo

Feeling stumped? Take a photo of your room and assess it that way. There’s something about a photo that allows you to see your room from a different perspective.

That room looks great, and I love the name Chum Bucket lol. Big fan of spongebob.

Thanks, but I didn’t name the house after Sponge Bob, so I don’t know what the Chum Bucket is on that show – a diner? All I know is The Crusty Crab.

It’s called Chum Bucket because it’s the size of a bucket and all our chums are invited.

The funny thing is, I always sneered at stupid house names, like “Clams Casino”. I thought if I ever owned one, I choose a refined name. What was I thinking? I must have been drinking from the wrong bottle that day.

Love your ideas! I will be posting about cool diy projects from my fellow design bloggers. If you would like to be included, send me 1 or 2 favorite ideas with pics and I’ll post about it with a link back to your site!

It is almost a post for Earth Day. You show how you can change the look of your room using almost exclusively what you already have.
