Before & After: A Home Office Gets A Colorful Makeover

Yikes! This home office for two sure needed a violent makeover. Can anyone tell me what that puffy chair is? Looking at this photo brings out the OCD in me. I happen to be reading a book about organizing everything in your home. I may just skip the home office chapter because these photos, sent to me from Sonu Mathew, has it covered.

What a transformation. This is one determined couple. Those stripes took a lot of work. Interior designer, Christopher Coleman, did a really fantastic job transforming this room for a couple who share this office. Both husband and wife have outside offices, but can opt to work at home – a growing trend. It’s estimated that 38% of the work force is mobile. That makes the efficiency and décor in a home office even more important. So what should you keep in mind when sprucing up that mess and preparing your home office for steady work?

Sonu, the color expert for Benjamin Moore, suggests using color choices that will help to motivate you and keep you alert, stimulated and, above all else, feeling upbeat and happy. “Another thing to keep in mind is how the space will fit in and coordinate with the rest of your décor and color usage in the house,” says Sonu.

As I always say, choose the paint last. But you can select colors as a starting point. Once you’ve chosen the furnishings, you can tweak your paint choices to match, if that’s what you’re going for.
Christopher chose colors from adjacent rooms and brought them into the office. The transformation was radical, to say the least. He kept the furnishings to a minimum – what, no puffy chair? The clients love having a room that’s vibrant and inviting. I love the striped artwork over the striped wall. I also love the white, laminated workspace set against the blue chairs.
If you’re interested in recreating this look, try these Benjamin Moore colors:
  • Electric Blue 2061-40
  • Pink Mix 2089-30
  • Split Pea 2146-30
  • Jack O’lantern 2156-30
  • Yellow Marigold 2155-30 on the ceiling.
I really need to repaint my office. Sonu is so right that your homes’ color palette needs to make sense throughout your home. My light pine green office is sadly out of place. For inspiration, I’m taking a look at Sonu’s color options for May. I think French Beret could take me straight through the year and blend with the rest of my colorful home.
What’s going on in your home office?
