Totally Ugly Furniture From the Salone del Mobile

Okay! So, one might think that everything in the Contemporary Halls would be (a) contemporary and (b) well designed and (c) useful in some sort of way. You would be wrong. Here, I offer proof that, just because a company can afford the price of space at the Salone (super-duper furniture and design show held once a year in Milan), your offerings are just as super-duper. Read on…

This lamp just makes me laugh. All the lamps this company makes were just as hideous. If this were in my house, I wouldn’t get much sleep for fear that those claws and the base might creep into my bedroom and I’d find that shade sucking my blood at two o’clock in the morning. Those beads are red, after all. Yikes. So, if you’ve read my many posts about Mr. Phillippe Stark, you know that I think he’s been surfing on the success of his Ghost Chair ever since he created it two centuries ago. Case in point, this design for… what? In case you’re guessing, it’s a lamp and a stand for your iPad! At a very affordable price – I am soooo sure. Please tell me how would one actually use this? Seriously, I want to know.

Has anyone seen Tinkerbell? Her bed is ready. Or, maybe this was made for Mothra. I’m not sure. It is meant for a child, but those wings look scary to me. I’m wondering, if you start your child out in a bed like this, what will become of her as an adult? Any guesses?

What was this doing in the contemporary palace? I ask you. I know this button upholstery is coming back in, but I hope it’s not leading to this. I’m thinking of Morticia Munster fainting on this.

And now, for the winner of The Ugliest Thing I Saw At The Salone Award…

What the heck is this? And, no. this wasn’t part of the same collection seen above. I really am speechless. I don’t know what to write about this. I’m also laughing so hard that it’s tough to type. The pleating is nice. And they got the buttons all lined up. As with some of the other badly designed items in this post, I am reminded of a fictional character. This one being Casper the Friendly Ghost.

So, what would you do with this chair besides burn it? I’m noticing that there is no fancy flower arrangement nearby (see above). But then, it was part of a set.

Thoughts?
