Batik fabrics from Etsy’s Brilliant Batik
I love Batik fabrics. I made a nice scarf in a textiles class I took a few years ago. It’s fun and not too difficult. ZyHan, is an expert – a true artist. Her batiks are unlike any I’ve seen before. They’re true works of art.
The designs she creates are very ornate, compared to most you see with an overall design.
She sells a variety of fabric lengths, fat quarters and some accessories in her Etsy Shop, Brilliant Batik.
These remind me of Hermes scarves. ZyHan works mostly with high quality silks. Most of her fabrics are 1 meter in length and sell for $30.00. But she’s happy to take on custom work.
Batik fabrics make beautiful curtains – these would be especially beautiful for that. Pillows and cushions are an obvious way to go. Cotton batiks are perfect for bedding – sew lengths together to make a duvet cover, or sew up some toss pillows for a finishing touch on the bed.
ZyHan was nice enough to share her simple instructions for creating your own Batik masterpieces. Stay tuned tomorrow for that.
In the meantime, have you used batik prints in your home? Send me photos!
Call for submissions
I’m in the process of redesigning Design Hole. It needs some sprucing up. I’m changing the masthead, which will now have a series of rotating wallpapers and fabrics.
I’m contacting some favorites of mine, but I’d like to showcase undiscovered, young, old, interesting fabric and wallpaper designers. If you, or someone you know, might be interested in having their work on the masthead, please have them contact me. Their name will appear in the lower-left hand corner of the masthead, or just below it.
Thanks for helping me spread the word.
Friday Favorite: Gretchen Langner’s fabrics & bags
Fine artist, Gretchen Langner’s life is a “tapestry of art and movement.” Her paintings hang in both public and private collections. She has recently been inspired to delve into the world of fabrics for interior design. Her online shop sells fabrics as well as cute tote bags and note cards featuring images of her artwork.
All of Gretchen’s patterns, like Bud,¬† are large in scale. I love this trend. Make it big!
Double Dot is intended to coordinate with Gretchen’s other designs. She makes a single dot, too.
Gretchen’s Spiral comes in eight colorways. Each design is shown on furniture, so you can determine the scale.
I like this one best. Flower, like all her prints, is hand-screened.
Her bags come in two sizes. Medium bags are $80. Large are $90.
You can buy Gretchen Langner’s designs printed on four different fabrics including cotton/linen and sailcloth. The fabrics sell for $89 per yard and there is a ten yard minimum. That’s a rather large minimum order, in my opinion. She needs to add a swatch option, too.
As I said, I love the large-scale prints I’m seeing. How about you? Do you like the big stuff?
Clarissa Hulse’s jewel-toned fabrics and wallpapers
A happy surprise at ICFF was discovering the work of Clarissa Hulse. Her interior design products are sold in shops throughout the world as well as her own shop Online.
Clarissa began creating fabrics from her home base in the UK in 1992. Her line is now extensive and includes wallpapers, bedding, and pillows.
I love her jewel-toned fabrics and wallpapers which are hand-screened onto linen and silk. Her fabrics come in upholstery and “soft home” weight (that means a lighter weight for curtains, pillows, etc.) and are sold by the meter.
One of my favorite fabrics is Virginia Creeper (above). It comes in four colorways. Briar (below) comes in six. Love that one, too.
These chairs are awesome! I’m also showing a peek at her bedding line and gifts, like notebooks.
Something else that’s cool about Clarissa is that she’s a Hulse, which is my maiden name. I don’t often run across it. I guess that makes us cousins, doesn’t it?
