Before & After In The Garden: Year 3 Of Our Willow Tree Allée
Welcome to year three of the allée of flowering willow trees planted by misterarthur in a flash of brilliance. Our former Kitty Litter side yard didn’t always look quite so lovely. We’d have this great idea that didn’t quite work out, so it was left to rot… Read More…
Contest Winners!
I started this week by announcing that my garden club took second place in this year’s Trial Garden Contest. My computer is fixed and I’ve got the photo to show off our winning design.

I did all the work. Not. I actually did absolutely nothing. I didn’t even do any weeding! They never gave me the schedule. I’m a newbie, which is good. I know nothing about gardening except that I love them. I hope to begin learning a thing to two and sharing what I learn with you.
Design Hole is Cleaning Up
I just got back from my garden club meeting. Our trail garden won second place this year. Yay! I was going to scan a photo and show it to you, but we’ve got a new computer and it seems I have a lot of work to do getting it set up properly.
So, here’s a nice photo of another club’s trial garden.

I’ll be spending the day getting things up and running here – cleaning up – you might say. Be back tomorrow!
Mitchell garden revisited
If you recall, last year misterarthur and I finally got around the sprucing up the side of our house, which had become a gravel pit (that reminded me of a kitty litter box). You can read the first exciting episode here.
Here are the before and after photos taken last year before and after we planted several Variegated Willow trees in said gravel pit. To read the second exciting episode, follow this link.
Our little trees have now grown and are well on their way to becoming a beautiful all?©e.
What a difference a year makes. We bought these at Detroit’s Eastern Market – the place to go for all kinds of plants at great prices. Be sure to go early on Saturday to get the best choices.
Later this week I’ll post some photos of our neighbor’s roses. He’s got a golden green thumb that even Mr. Pigglesworth would admire.
International Design Hole Day Off
No, I didn’t get eaten by a giant lobster while in New Hampshire at my family reunion last weekend. I came home with a terrible cold and have decided to take the rest of the week off to recuperate and catch up on work.

I promise to return with lots of great decorating tips, ideas, and a terrific giveaway next week. I hope you all have a wonderful Fourth of July. And for my international friends, a wonderful Bastille Day, or Canada Day. If that doesn’t cover it, how about an official International Design Hole Decorating Day?
Here are some ideas:
- Repaint a room
- Collect all the clutter and old clothes and hold a garage sale, or donate to charity.
- Plant some flowers in pots for the patio.
- Take a nap in a hammock and sip a cold drink.
- Shovel the walk (if you live in the Southern Hemisphere).
- Catch up on all your favorite Design Hole posts!
I’ll see you next week.
