Steampunk Design Inspiration

Kyle MacLachlan

I watched Dune last weekend. It’s a terrible movie. Whoever adapted the screenplay (apparently David Lynch) must have been in an altered state of mind, because nothing makes sense. In fact, I couldn’t get to the end of it due to mind-numbing boredom. But it sure looks cool.

That guy in the middle looks as bored as I was. Notice the Beaux Arts-influenced motif on that boiler thing behind him.

In fact, it looks like a Steampunk lover’s dream come true. Anthony Masters was the production designer. So if you’re a fan of Steampunk take a look at Dune and perhaps more of Masters’ work. These images are not the finest representation. The internet offers slim pickings. You’re going to have to watch the movie to truly appreciate what I’m talking about. You have my sympathy. I suggest plenty of popcorn and beer.

This machine flies through the air and carries a giant, talking squid-type creature.

Steampunk Jewelry

Okay, I’m on a kick here. But I really like this stuff. I think those clocks I wrote about earlier today would look truly incredible in any room - contemporary and otherwise. I love mixing things up like that. At first it looks kind of normal, but then you notice that it isn’t.

So here I’ve got some Steampunk jewelry. This necklace is currently up for auction on eBay. Above is the close-up and below is the whole shebang.

The artist’s name remains a mystery. But she has a blog where she shows off her jewelry designs. It’s called Monkeyshines. The link will take you to her Steampunk designs, but she has other styles as well.

Chair of the Day: Steampunk

Artist Michael Kingery designed and drew this Steampunk chair for you to color in. For more information, and to congratulate Michael on his “too fab” design visit his site (link with his name) or go to Deviant Art.

Steampunk Movement

I’m sure there are many who will roll their eyes for writing about this after the New York Times heard about it. But trust me, I knew about it first. Anyway, this movement is really interesting and it will be lots of fun to see where it goes. It’s kind of hard to describe Steampunk. It poses the question, “What would our world be like if we still used Victorian steam power and analog equipment?” It has a sort of Jules Verne fantasy look to it.

Enthusiasts make working machines - keyboards seem to be very popular. But there are also interiors done in the style. To really delve into the entire movement I recommend a visit to The Steampunk Home blog. Here’s a photo gallery of my favorite Steampunk stuff.

Here’s a Steampunk tree house. This photo was taken by Zachary Wasserman. Their site has a lot of other photos. It’s worth looking at for inspiration.

As I said, there are a lot of people making working keyboards using old typewriter keys. Datamancer is a great site to see how it’s done and see and buy different styles. They’re all made to order.

You can find lots of cool laptops at Steampunk Gadgets. I like this one.

These clocks are the handcrafted work of Roger Wood. These are a few he has currently listed for sale. I say, “Perfect Gift!” This site is called Klockwerks.

Here are a couple of interior shots from Three Rings Design’s offices created by Because We Can. They designed all the furniture, etc. They also have an online shop with a cool, but not so Steampunk LED table. I found this via Gizmowatch (I think it’s a blog, but it was hard to tell).

The new “It” eyewear. Forget Chanel. It’s Steampunk goggles for me.
