Cicatrices De Luxe 8 Pendant Light

What do you think of this pendant lamp? It’s designed by Philippe Starck. I’m always trying to figure out what he’s thinking when he comes up with these sort of novelties. It reminds me of those cut crystal bowls over at Gradnma’s house. They’re always filled with candy that’s become stuck together and sports a topping of dust.

Maybe this is one of those things that you really have to see to appreciate. I hope so, because it sells for $6,150. As my mother would say, “You could make that yourself.” And you should. But that’s just my humble opinion. At any rate, you can check it our over at Y-Lighting.

Chair of the Day: Plan Canvas

Hi! I’m supposed to be relaxing at the beach. But I found this great site called Plan Canvas and decided to post a Chair of the Day. It should probably be called Chair of the Week.

Anyway, this site sells plans for furniture that you make yourself. So, if you got power tools for Christmas and are itching to use them, maybe this is for you.

This particular chair is called Chair 00004. I think they need to work on the names a bit. You can buy the plans, which are downloaded, for a mere $3.99. What a deal!

Instant Decorating: The Picture Perfect Wall

I’ve written a few posts about how to hang pictures. Here’s a product that does all the thinking for you. It’s called Picture Perfect Wall. Basically, you decide on the size of the space you want to cover and buy an assortment of frames that are pre-arranged so they’ll look nice in a grouping. I really want to hate this product, because it’s kind of like sofa-sized paintings - nothing personal. But the truth is I can’t find anything wrong with it. Arghhh!

You can, and absolutely should (or I’ll personally come to your house and spank you), use your own art or photos! But they offer free downloads of art and photos. I guess this is if your family is particularly ugly, or you have no taste in art. Anyway, this is a quick and easy way to spruce up just in time for the holidays. They even include little things to help you hang everything perfectly. Be sure to include pix of your visiting relatives in the mix and everyone will be happy.

Chair of the Day: John Urso’s Specter Chair

The Specter Chair, from New Jersey designer John Urso, comes in fabric impregnated with resin to create a structure that stands up. Hence the haunting name. “There’s no structure under there. You can see through it and sit on it too,” says Urso.

I say, “Who would want to?”

I have two major problems with this kind of thing. First, it’s super expensive. The one shown here is $2,500. Second, and even worse, is that like all jokes the “magic” of this chair is only funny (or “Amazing!”) once. After that it’s just another chair - and a rather expensive and ugly one at that. You’ve got to have a whole lot of friends that want amazing! in a bad way to get your money’s worth out of it.

Has Anyone Seen My Wagon Wheel?

Sometimes I’m left just scratching my head, wondering why and how anyone could come up with something that’s so clearly wrong. Those giant, puckered pads on cheap microfiber sofas come immediately to mind. (Gee, why don’t we see those at B&B Italia?)

Anyway, here is another case in point. It’s Bristol & Bath’s barrel vanity. “Make the bath vineyard chic,” they say. This barrel sink is part of their Second Chance collection. I think they should try again. As they say, “Third time lucky!” I wonder what the toilet looks like (see headline).

Chair of the Day

I submit the Happy Leaf Chair as today’s Chair of the Day. This brightly painted chair is a one-of-a-kind thing from Etsy artist Kay Latham. This would look cute in a child’s room or in a kitchen. Remember, if you’re artistically inclined you could make one yourself using your own design. If you’re not, or are like me and wake up behind schedule, why not buy this? It’s $250 and you can find it here.

UPDATE: File this under “DUH“. What was I thinking yesterday when I completely forgot about Bauhaus Week of Chairs? I’ll blame it on the hip-recovery, not me aging (egads!).

Chair of the Day: Droog Rag Chair

I’m going on vacation tomorrow, so I’ve been in a silly mood all week. I’m getting my mind into beach mode. Hence most of the chairs this week (except yesterday’s - I like that).

The folks at Droog designed this Rag Chair, which is layered from 15 bags of rags. The description at Greener Grass Design says: It arrives ready made, but the user has the option to recycle their own discarded clothes to be included in the design. Each piece is unique, but it can also become a treasured chest of memories.”

Now the last part is actually kind of nice. I could turn all of my son’s baby clothes into a chair and then his kids could sit on it one day! Omygod, someone give me a hankie, quick! Sorry, I was overwhelmed with emotion there for a moment. It is kind of a sweet idea. But not for $3,325! Come on now. That’s just preying on the small segment of green-minded people who are stupid. Shame.

Plus, as my mother would say, “Jennifer ,you could make that yourself!” And she’d be right! See, when I was a kid my mother decided that if you could make something yourself, you weren’t allowed to buy it. Even if we both knew it would never be made - whatever “it” was. So I’m starting a new Label today called, “You could make that yourself.” And the Rag Chair is the first to wear it. Congratulations.

Can’t you tell I need a vacation?
