What does it remind you of. A sleeping bag draped over a folding chair? What your “bed” looked like after a late night smoking alternative products? Whatever, you can buy one to remind you of those good times at Moss, (which I adore – I hope they’ll excuse me for having a little fun) for a mere $8,350.00.

In the real world (where I live) this is an original Red and Blue Chair, designed by Gerrit Rieveld in 1918. These are now in museums! Baas took a blowtorch to one, along with a lot of other iconic originals, for a show called “Where There’s Smoke.” Do you think he sold any? Probably.

Apparently, “through the process of destruction, he gives history new relevance.”

I say, “What the [expletive]?” Who does this Baas guy think he is, Jeff Koons? They certainly belong in the same clubhouse. The way I see it, if you’re Marcel Wanders and you want to burn your own furniture. Fine. But it’s laughable to suggest that by burning someone else’s chair you’re creating “new relevance.” Give me a break.

Give me a break. And, if I am indeed missing something, please PLEASE! leave your thoughts. If you can convince me that I am, in fact, a philistine, I’ll say so out loud and send you a Design Hole Tee shirt.

Maybe this is one of those things that you really have to see to appreciate. I hope so, because it sells for $6,150. As my mother would say, “You could make that yourself.” And you should. But that’s just my humble opinion. At any rate, you can check it our over at Y-Lighting.

Anyway, this site sells plans for furniture that you make yourself. So, if you got power tools for Christmas and are itching to use them, maybe this is for you.

This particular chair is called Chair 00004. I think they need to work on the names a bit. You can buy the plans, which are downloaded, for a mere $3.99. What a deal!

I say, “Who would want to?”

I have two major problems with this kind of thing. First, it’s super expensive. The one shown here is $2,500. Second, and even worse, is that like all jokes the “magic” of this chair is only funny (or “Amazing!”) once. After that it’s just another chair – and a rather expensive and ugly one at that. You’ve got to have a whole lot of friends that want amazing! in a bad way to get your money’s worth out of it.

Anyway, here is another case in point. It’s Bristol & Bath’s barrel vanity. “Make the bath vineyard chic,” they say. This barrel sink is part of their Second Chance collection. I think they should try again. As they say, “Third time lucky!” I wonder what the toilet looks like (see headline).

UPDATE: File this under “DUH“. What was I thinking yesterday when I completely forgot about Bauhaus Week of Chairs? I’ll blame it on the hip-recovery, not me aging (egads!).

The folks at Droog designed this Rag Chair, which is layered from 15 bags of rags. The description at Greener Grass Design says: It arrives ready made, but the user has the option to recycle their own discarded clothes to be included in the design. Each piece is unique, but it can also become a treasured chest of memories.”

Now the last part is actually kind of nice. I could turn all of my son’s baby clothes into a chair and then his kids could sit on it one day! Omygod, someone give me a hankie, quick! Sorry, I was overwhelmed with emotion there for a moment. It is kind of a sweet idea. But not for $3,325! Come on now. That’s just preying on the small segment of green-minded people who are stupid. Shame.

Plus, as my mother would say, “Jennifer ,you could make that yourself!” And she’d be right! See, when I was a kid my mother decided that if you could make something yourself, you weren’t allowed to buy it. Even if we both knew it would never be made – whatever “it” was. So I’m starting a new Label today called, “You could make that yourself.” And the Rag Chair is the first to wear it. Congratulations.
